What is Back a Long Way about?
As told by the author, Esther Clark Wright: ""It was all so different back in the 1890s and the first years of the twentieth century, a simpler life and a smaller Fredericton. The first part of the book is an attempt to picture it as it remains in memory. Recollections of the older people one knew help to fill in the picture. The accounts of people met in various parts of the world, and the Christmas letters [pp.49-110], which many people had asked me to reprint, have to do with a later period from the 1940s on, and range far and wide. Finally, there are the attempts to recreate persons and events of the eighteenth century, and two longer pieces of fiction of the twentieth century. It was fun to put it all together, and for a partial consolation for not being able, because of various contretemps, to complete the book on the Bay of Fundy.""
