The maintenance of desirable dissolved oxygen regimes in rivers is a major concern. By lowering the nutrient supplies to a river, it is possible to promote a decrease in the plant growth rate . However, it is not known whether such measures will reduce the plant quantity to an acceptable level, especially in rivers that support a sizeable community of aquatic plants . Therefore, it is necessary to incorporate a quantitative biomass control measure into the future consideration of water quality management in shallow rivers .
