The origin of the name "Muntinlupa" came from either the thin top soil, a misunderstanding of a question by Spanish settlers about a card game, or from the topographical features of the area meaning "mountain land". Muntinlupa grew into a progressive town and was divided into two districts when it formed a political district with Las Pinas after the 1986 constitution.
