Bypass capacitors are used to dampen alternating currents caused by voltage fluctuations, or ripple, in direct current circuits. They conduct high frequency noise to ground while allowing DC to pass through. Too much ripple can cause digital circuits to malfunction. It is recommended to place a bypass capacitor near each integrated circuit to filter out noise. Common values are 0.1uF or 0.01uF ceramic capacitors.
