About this document

Ancient Catapults: Engineering Marvels by Andrea Folicaldi is a document available to read on EtoBox.

Dionysius the Elder of Syracuse commissioned engineers in 399 BC to develop new weapons, resulting in the first catapults. These early catapults fired arrows using a mechanized bow and winch system. Later designs used torsion springs which allowed for larger projectiles like stones weighing over 25 kilograms to be fired with accuracy over 600 meters. Ancient texts and recent reconstructions reveal the Greeks and Romans developed sophisticated catapult engineering.
