Sultan Mehmet II laid siege to Constantinople in 1453 through the use of new cannons and ships, breaking through the city walls by May to capture the city. Following this conquest, Mehmet began rebuilding projects to repopulate the city as the new capital of the Ottoman Empire, establishing himself as the "Conqueror".
