What is Book reviews about?
While living in Paris last year, I turned on the "t616" one slow Saturday April evening to watch "Droit de Rrponse," a French issues-oriented talk show. Who should materialize on the screen other than Alan Bloom, there to hawk LAme dOsarmde, the French translation of The Closing of the American Mind. It was not a good night for Bloom. The deck had been stacked against him in the form of an array of unsympathetic, if not actively hostile, interlocutors: Harlem D~sir, founder of "SOS Racisme" and a frequent spokesperson for French youth; the pop culture editor for the left-of-center weekly Nouvel Observateur; and the black-leather clad author of Fast Fooda novel extolling the virtues of youthful nihilism -who came across as a literary version of Billy Idol. On Bloom's side of the generation gap was Alain Finkelkraut, author of La Ddfaite de la pens~e, a book that tries to do for the realm of culture what American Mind does for that of education (and which turned out to be the great nonfiction success of the spring season); and Felix Guattari, sometime proponent of"schizo-analysis," who throughout the transmission seemed to be on a wavelength of his own.
