What is Al Capone and Prohibition about?
The 18th Amendment to the US Constitution instituted prohibition of alcohol nationwide in 1920. This created a lucrative black market led by gangsters like Al Capone in Chicago. Capone paid police and politicians to protect his criminal alcohol trade, which flourished during prohibition. Though the amendment banned alcohol, it allowed for some exceptions including religious and medical use. Prohibition was ultimately repealed in 1933 due to its failure to stop drinking and the empowerment of organized crime
