There are two modes of short-circuiting in clarifiers: 1) short-circuiting into the effluent and 2) short-circuiting into the underflow (sludge). Underflow short-circuiting results from insufficient sludge transport capacity, causing a mixture of bottom and inlet concentrations to be withdrawn rather than just the bottom concentration. The short-circuiting coefficient (z) ranges from 0 to 1 and can be calculated from routinely measured inlet (Xa) and recycled (Xr) concentrations and the bottom concentration
