Sir Robert Blenkinsopp sees his wife as just another possession - to be used, misused or discarded like everything else at Newton Law, his moorland estate. His aim is to tame or destroy her for leaving him, and since he has her small son in his hands, Amy must return and suffer the consequences. Duffy, the gamekeeper, is impressed with the way she handles herself and faces up to her husband. Needless to say he is overjoyed when Sir Robert is found unconscious at the bottom of a staircase and is deprived of the power of speech and movement.
