What is A Time In Turkey about?

Living in Turkey with Turkish families near Istanbul and in the village of Ortahisar, Craig Mair began to feel Turkish himself and became integrated into their way of life, fully accepted as one of them. He had always wanted to live there since his father had discovered that the village of Ortahisar, in central Anatolia, was without a local doctor and often stayed in the village running a busy surgery in the local restaurant. Dr Mair was the only doctor the villagers had ever really known and they waited for his return year after year and gave a great welcome to the doctor's son. Craig Mair first worked as a carpet seller in the Bazaar in Istanbul, helped to improve the hotel and tourist facilities in Ortahisar, became a guide to visitors to the Rock Churches, joined a pop-group with his guitar and became engaged to a young Turkish girl. He gives an unusual picture of the country and of the experiences of a young man of initiative and enterprise. Arising out of his knowledge acquired as an official guide he adds interesting notes for travellers and more specialist visitors on the Rock Churches of Cappadocia.
