What is Astropy Project: Challenges and Solutions about?

The Astropy Project is a community effort to develop a single core Python package for astronomy. It has been managed and developed as a volunteer effort for 5 years, while being critical software for the majority of astronomers. However, the project remains effectively unfunded, and contributors receive little recognition for their work creating and supporting this important software. The document explores this problem and potential solutions to sustain astronomical software development.
