Commercial red meat production in the United States totaled 4.24 billion pounds in July 2018, up 6% from July 2017. Beef production increased 6% to 2.23 billion pounds and cattle slaughter rose 6% to 2.77 million head. Pork production was up 6% to 1.99 billion pounds with hog slaughter increasing 6% to 9.60 million head. For the period of January to July 2018, total commercial red meat production was 30.5 billion pounds, up 4% from the same period in 2017.
