What is Volkswagen about?

Volkswagen was founded in the 1930s in Germany. Ferdinand Porsche was chosen to design an affordable car, the Volkswagen Beetle, for average German citizens. The car was intended to be purchased through a savings scheme. Prototypes were produced starting in 1936. However, few were delivered before World War 2 began in 1939, and production switched to military vehicles. After the war, Volkswagen honored the savings agreements and the Beetle became a popular mass-market car.
