Gandhinagar was established as the capital of Gujarat in 1970. The city was carefully planned starting in the 1960s on a site of 56.72 square kilometers along the Sabarmati River. The initial development from 1970-1975 included 12 sectors and 7,466 government-owned residences near the administrative complex. Further development from 1976-1980 added 4 more sectors and 5,556 new residences. The final phase from 1981-1985 included one additional sector and 3,406 new homes.
