Rizal was exiled to Dapitan by the Spanish authorities from 1892 to 1896. During his exile, he established schools, hospitals, farms and other community projects that benefited the residents of Dapitan. He practiced medicine, taught, engaged in business and pursued his scientific, linguistic and artistic interests. He also fell in love with Josephine Bracken, an Irish girl living in Dapitan.
