Vertical hole spacing in racks follows a repeating pattern of 1/2 inch, 5/8 inch, and 5/8 inch holes within each 1.75 inch rack unit. The horizontal spacing between vertical hole rows is specified as 18 5/16 inches, but some racks vary from this. Rack openings have a minimum size of 17.72 inches, but can be larger, and square hole racks tend to be close to the minimum. The only dimension of a 19-inch rack that actually measures 19 inches is the width of equipment front panels.
