What is The Encyclopedia of American Independent Filmmaking: about?

This indispensable single-volume reference work surveys independent filmmaking from cinema's inception through the 21st century.

Library Journal

LoBrutto is best known for his interview collections with film production professionals (e.g., Principal Photography: Interviews with Feature Film Cinematographers), and his new guide to American independent filmmaking retains the quality of his previous work. The volume features mostly brief entries (although some are two pages long) on all aspects of U.S. films created, financed, produced, and distributed outside the corporate structure, from the profound to the remarkably bad. LoBrutto admits to a New York bias, but all aspects of both historic and contemporary independents are addressed, save for electronic cinema. The entries are well written and opinionated, often amusingly so, with a good deal of statistical information interspersed throughout; some include short secondary bibliographies. Numerous cross references and an excellent index complement the entries, and the volume concludes with a good secondary bibliography and appendixes on "100 Significant Independent Films," Sundance and Independent Spirit Award win
