What is Acetaldehyde Production from Acetic Acid about?

This patent describes a method for producing acetaldehyde by hydrogenating acetic acid over an iron oxide catalyst containing 2.5-90 wt% palladium. Hydrogen and acetic acid are fed to a reactor at 250-400°C with a hydrogen to acetic acid ratio of 2:1 to 25:1. The partially gaseous product is absorbed in acetic acid to extract the acetaldehyde. Unreacted acetic acid is separated using azeotropic distillation with ethyl acetate and water. The produced acetaldehyde is then isolated by distillation.
