What is Church about?

During the colonial period, the Catholic Church played an important role in the evangelization of the indigenous people and in the transmission of Spanish cultural values. The priests arrived with the conquerors to convert the indigenous people to Christianity and support the conquest of the new continent. The Church prohibited indigenous religious beliefs and practices and took control of education and social welfare during the viceroyalty.
