What is Wordsworth about?
William Wordsworth composed this poem while walking along a road from Calais to Ardres in France on August 7, 1802. In the poem, he recalls how the road was filled with joyful celebrations of the new liberty that had been pledged to the recently established French Republic. However, now the celebrations are gone and the only greetings he hears are hollow echoes of "Good-morrow, Citizen." While pensive, Wordsworth is not touched by despair, similar to a bird whose habitat has been stripped bare by winter.
