The story is about Malin Kundang and his mother who lived in a village in West Sumatra. Malin Kundang helped defeat pirates and was offered to sail with a merchant, leaving his mother. Years later, after becoming wealthy, Malin Kundang denied knowing his mother when she came to see him. Enraged, his mother cursed him to turn into stone. During a storm at sea, Malin Kundang was thrown from his ship and turned into stone, unable to escape his curse.
