A dynamic simulator is, for the first time, proposed to evaluate solutions generated by a meta-heuristic based on the greedy randomized adaptive search procedure (GRASP) and variable neighborhood descent (VND) to ensure reliability in the optical fronthaul with the functional split recommended to the fifth generation (5G) cellular network architecture. A comparison between solutions generated in scenarios with variations of resources such quantity of processing capacity, network size, connectivity and functional split options, is performed also to comply with the latency requirement of 5G. The results clearly indicated that connectivity is the most important resource to be considered in the determination of the optimal functional split.
