The history of APPN within VTAM is relatively new. In 1993, IBM introduced APPN into the mainframe environment with VTAM V4R1 and NCP V6R2. There were many restrictions, which meant that some customers did not feel the need to migrate to or implement VTAM V4R1. They could not see any real benefits.
