What is Observing Growth and Crystallization of Au@ZnO Core–Shell Nanoparticles by In Situ Liquid Cell Transmission Electron Microscopy: Implications for Photocatalysis and Gas-Sensing Applications about?

Recently, heterogeneous nanomaterials have a wide range of applications because of their various combined functions. As a promising material for photocatalysis and gas sensing, Au@ ZnO core-shell nanoparticles have been in the spotlight in the past few years owing to their distinct electronic properties. However, the reaction mechanisms of Au@ZnO core-shell nanoparticles have not been fully explored. In this work, we proposed an electron beam-induced method for the formation of Au@ZnO core-shell nanoparticles, and the growth and crystallization mechanisms were investigated through in situ transmission electron microscopy observation. It was found that the electron beam could decompose hexamethylenetetramine and trigger the growth of the CTAB-ZnO shell on the surface of the Au nanoparticles, and the growth exponent of the shell was relatively small compared to that obtained under diffusion-limited conditions, which could be attributed to the viscosity of the solution and the distribution of the nanoparticles. For the crystallization of ZnO shells, the amorphous ZnO shells were transformed into the crystalline state under high-dose-rate electron beam irradiation. The volumetric chang
