Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) works by sending multiple optical carrier signals of different wavelengths simultaneously through the same fiber optic strand. At the receiving end, the wavelengths are separated using a wavelength-division multiplexer. WDM increases network capacity and flexibility compared to other technologies by allowing multiple non-overlapping wavelength signals to occupy the same fiber.
