The Maharashtra government diluted the Gunthewari Act, which will benefit around 50 lakh house owners across the state. The Act previously made it illegal to divide agricultural land into small plots measured in "gunthas" and barred construction and sale of properties on such divided land. The changes will allow people to purchase small plots of land outside city limits and construct houses. Around 18 lakh homes in Pimpri-Chinchwad alone had been built on "gunthewari" land prior to these changes.
