Ecaterina Teodoroiu was a Romanian woman who served as a volunteer nurse and scout during World War I. She fought bravely in several battles and was injured twice but returned to the front lines. On August 22, 1917, while leading her platoon as a lieutenant, she was fatally shot in the heart during an attack. Ecaterina Teodoroiu became a heroine of Romania for her courage and sacrifice during the war. She was later buried with military honors in Targu Jiu.
