What is Philip Wilson Steer (Border Lines (Bridgend, Wales).) about?
Universally respected by fellow artists for his early portraits and stunning landscapes, Steer (1860-1942) was one of the first English Impressionists. A friend of Whistler and Sickert, he helped found the New English Art Club, formed in response to Royal Academy staidness. Holt traces Steer's development and his role in making French Impressionist techniques acceptable to an initially unreceptive English audience.
