An improved method is described for synthesizing metoclopramide (MCP) using isopropanol as the solvent in the condensation step, yielding MCP in 98% yield. This is an improvement over previous methods using excess amine, higher temperatures, and lower yields. A new simple method is also presented for synthesizing MCP hydrochloride from MCP, using hydrochloric acid in methanol followed by precipitation with acetone, yielding excellent results without anhydrous conditions.
