He has been active in many societies, particularly the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons (SOMOS) since 2004.He is an avid woodworker and birdwatcher, hobbies in which his two children, Mirabel and Jonathan, and his wife Kirsty tolerate his interest. They continue to live in Tacoma with their chickens and dog.
