What is Drowning, the New Zealand way: Prevention, rescue, resuscitation about?

Purpose of study: To study the characteristic of in-hospital cardiac arrest (CA) and the results of resuscitation in different paediatric age groups. Materials and methods: a prospective, international, observational, multicentre study was performed. 124 hospitals from 16 European and Latin-American countries participated during 24 months. CA in children between 1 month and 18 years were analysed using the Utstein template. Age was categorized as infant (8 years). Results: 543 CA episodes were registered. Mean age was 44.3 months (48.5% infants, 33.2% young children, 18.3% older children). 56.2% males. Overall, sustained return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) was attained in 68.9% of the patients. Only 33.3% survived. ROSC was lower in older child group (62.5% vs. 70.9% young child, and 70.1% infants) but no statistically significant differences were found (p = 0.2). Survival was higher amongst infants (40.1%) and young child (39.8%) than older child (32.4%) but did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.3). Respiratory and cardiac CA have higher survival rates (42%) than sepsis, neurologic and traumatic causes (20.6%) (p Conclusions: Survival to in-hospital paediatric CA is r
