Glycolysis is the breakdown of glucose to pyruvate through a series of 10 steps. It occurs in the cytoplasm and produces either pyruvate or lactate depending on oxygen availability. Aerobic glycolysis produces pyruvate and generates 8 ATP molecules, while anaerobic glycolysis produces lactate and 2 ATP. The Krebs cycle is a series of chemical reactions in mitochondria that produces carbon dioxide and generates more ATP and NADH/FADH2 from acetyl-CoA derived from pyruvate.
