The Neurosciences Nursing Development Unit in Nottingham had an unacceptably high cancellation rate for its elective patients, delayed access for emergency admissions, and neurological patients who had to be transferred to other wards in the hospital. The neurosciences outreach liaison nurse role was introduced in January 2005 with the objective of improving the quality of service to patients and to review existing processes with the aim of reducing the amount of cancellations. Since the introduction of this role, the number of cancellations as a result of a lack of beds has fallen dramatically, patients ‘slept-out’ to other wards has become a practice of the past, all emergency patients referred to the unit are admitted within 24 hours, and the waiting list has been halved. All this has been achieved using existing capacity in an effective way.
