This study evaluates the ichthyofauna of the Rio Caeté estuary in northeastern Brazil, documenting 120 species of Teleostei from 16 orders and 48 families based on 22,295 specimens. The research highlights the lack of taxonomic knowledge regarding marine fish in the region, which poses challenges for biogeographic and conservation efforts. To aid in species identification, a taxonomic key for the fish species of the Caeté estuary and coastal species from the northern Brazilian coast is provided.
