What is Dampeners about?
The document discusses the use of viscoelastic dampers in the construction of the World Trade Center towers. The dampers, made of rubber sandwiched between plates, were installed in approximately 10,000 locations in each tower to absorb kinetic energy from wind and allow floors some flexibility. However, in the 9/11 attacks, the intense heat from fires caused the rubber dampers to melt, leaving floors unsupported and contributing to the collapse below the aircraft impact zones.
