The Supreme Court of the Philippines reversed the conviction of Amando Juaquico for estafa, finding he lacked guilty knowledge that the checks he endorsed to Robert Chan had insufficient funds. While Juaquico received the checks from a customer, Ham, and endorsed them to Chan in exchange for goods, there was no evidence Juaquico knew the checks would bounce. However, Juaquico was still found civilly liable for P329,000, the amount obtained from Chan using the bad checks, plus interest.
