What is Diamond vs. Graphite: Allotropic Differences about?

Carbon has two allotropes, diamond and graphite, which have different crystalline structures. Diamond consists of carbon atoms in a tetrahedral arrangement with each atom bonded to four others, giving it extreme hardness. Graphite also consists of carbon atoms but in a layered hexagonal arrangement where each is bonded to three others, with delocalized electrons between layers enabling softness and flakiness as the layers can slide over each other.
