What is Glowing Phenomena in Copper Contacts about?
1) Experiments were conducted on copper wire contacts powered by AC or DC current to study the glow phenomenon and expansion of the oxidized "hot zone". 2) The glowing path reached temperatures over 1200°C, with heat generated primarily from Joule heating rather than chemical reaction. 3) The hot zone expanded toward both wire ends with AC but toward the positive pole with DC. Maximum expansion rates were 18 mm/hr for 1mm DC wire and 6 mm/hr for 2mm AC wire.
