The study isolated two strains of Rhizobium meliloti (RMP3 and RMP5) from nodules of Mucuna pruriens that were able to produce siderophores and inhibit the fungal pathogen Macrophomina phaseolina that causes charcoal rot in groundnut plants. Inoculation of groundnut seeds with these strains prior to planting in M. phaseolina-infected soil led to increased seed germination, seedling biomass, nodule number, and nodule fresh weight compared to uninoculated controls, demonstrating their potential as biocontrol
