What is Swallowing Process Overview about?
The swallowing process occurs in two stages - oral-pharyngeal and esophageal. In the oral-pharyngeal stage, a bolus is pressed against the roof of the mouth by the tongue and pushed backwards towards the uvula. Pharyngeal contractions then drive the bolus into the esophagus. During the esophageal stage, peristalsis pushes the bolus through the esophagus and into the stomach. If the bolus sticks to the esophagus, secondary waves clear the esophagus to complete swallowing.
