What is Mitochondria: Structure and Function about?

Mitochondria were first observed in 1850 and given various names before being termed mitochondria in 1898. Mitochondria vary in shape and size but have a double membrane structure. The inner membrane forms folds called cristae that increase surface area for ATP production. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of eukaryotic cells, using oxygen to produce ATP through electron transport chains located on the inner membrane.
