Protein and amino acid metabolism occurs in two phases: [1] removal of amino groups forming ammonia and ketoacids, and [2] conversion of carbon skeletons into common energy-producing intermediates. Amino acids are broken down through transamination, deamination, and the urea cycle which produces urea from ammonia in the liver for excretion. Disorders of the urea cycle can cause hyperammonemia which is toxic due to effects on glutamate dehydrogenase and energy production.
