What is Genetically improved aquaculture species in Bangladesh about?

This chapter is written to outline recent fish breeding plan and genetic research program initiated by Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI), public university(s), and WorldFish, Bangladesh and South Asia. BFRI initiated and continued genetic stock improvement program of silver barb, Barbonymus gonionotus (1996–2008); genetically improved farmed tilapia (GIFT) strain, Oreochromis niloticus (1999–2019); and rohu, Labeo rohita (1999–2018) using both individual selection and family selection techniques. In these trials, cumulative genetic gain at harvest weight after 3 generations of silver barb, 13 generations of GIFT, and 4 generations of rohu strains, respectively, was 36%, 64.44%, and 20.12%. WorldFish conducted stock improvement program of rohu (2013–2020) and developed G3 generation. BFRI already released improved generations of silver barb, GIFT strain, and rohu strains, and these strains have shown positive impacts on aquaculture production. Major strategies, challenges, and way forward issues for fish breeding plan and genetic stock improvement have also been comprehensively discussed in this chapter.
