Shrinkage stoping is a vertical mining method where broken ore remains in the stope to form a working floor and provide wall support. About 35% of the ore can be extracted as mining progresses upwards in horizontal slices. Stopes are developed between two levels spaced 100-600 feet apart, with raises providing access and ventilation. Ore is extracted through drawholes in the footwall as the stope back is blasted down in sections.
