It is fair to say that Byron, as the darkest of the Romantic poets, begins with failure. From the outset, his gaze falls on a collapsed world. It is not surprising, then, that some recollection of innocence is an important poetic theme. In paradise -either the Garden of Genesis, or the innocent state into which we were born -the universe had appeared to be good. There had been unity to it, and between it and the individual. Even the early lyrics are everywhere filled with this theme, and the usual emphasis is on the loss of unity man experiences by his fall. Consider, for example, the following poem, one of the many to Mary Chaworth: Hills of Annesley, bleak and barren, Where my thoughtless childhood stray'd, How the northern tempests, warring, Howl above thy tufted shade !
