In ancient times, cement was employed as a grout between blocks of stone. The term cement seems to have been used first by the Romans, to indicate any bonding agent. As a material, cement may be defined as an adhesive substance capable of uniting fragments or masses of solid materials into a compact, in which it contributes to the properties of the product obtained. It is a material that may acquire plasticity temporarily and, during the period of plasticity, the material may be pressed, easily moulded or in some other manner formed into objects of the desired shapes. When the plasticity disappears, the material hardens or sets and the shape is retained.
