What is Mg-based metal matrix composite in biomedical applications: A review about?
Magnesium matrix composites have potential uses in the fields of aerospace, automobiles, and orthopedic applications due to their low density, high strength-to-weight ratio, and superior mechanical characteristics of the composites. Magnesium has drawn important investigation in the field of orthopedics due to its biocompatibility, bioactive and bio-degradable nature. On the other hand, the low corrosion and wear resistance of implants made of magnesium has limited their use in medical applications. Therefore, the suitable use of reinforcement improves the wear and corrosion characteristics of the Mg matrix composites. The types of reinforcement and the amount of the reinforcement is critical in accessing the overall characteristics of the composites along with controlling the porosity (%) rate. Amongst various processing approaches (stir casting, liquid infiltration approach, semi-powder metallurgy approach, powder metallurgy, and disintegrated melt deposition), the best method of fabrication is powder metallurgy (PM) allowing no machining or less machining, forming complex shapes, and entailing the homogenous distribution of powder in the matrix.
