strong statement, for example, regarding the influence on H6ter of Ismacili thought; yet this influence has not been sufficiently examined. The evidence presented is indeed quite suggestive, but what were the medium, process, and extent of that influence? What is indicated by the paucity of similar traces in the work of other Yemeni thinkers? No criticism of this line of investigation is intended. Blumenthal is himself aware of the incompleteness of the evidence (p. 22). Rather, the question is whether any conclusions drawn are as yet premature. This volume is, in many ways, highly specialized. Notwithstanding this fact, however, Blumenthal has effectively brought forth material of essential value to the pursuit of a better understanding of a very vital part of Jewish and Middle Eastern history. It is to be hoped that it will be followed by more of the same.
