Harriet Tubman helped hundreds of slaves escape to freedom using the Underground Railroad, a secret network of people who helped slaves escape to the North. She was called a conductor because she led slaves as a guide along the Underground Railroad, risking her life to rescue an estimated 300 people. During the Civil War, Harriet continued helping others as a cook, nurse, and laundress for the Union Army.
